Course Description
: Harmony and compositional practices of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, form, melodic and harmonic analysis, composition.Course Objectives:
(290.3.3.32 Music-Common Rules (1) (a) (2)).
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
Analyze 18th century music in terms of form and harmonic motion.
Compose a chorale in 4-part harmony utilizing the part-writing rules of the 18th century.
Construct stylistically appropriate phrases utilizing good melodic and harmonic practices.
Understand and compose using 18th century voice-leading concepts.
Understand and compose using a variety of forms.
Understand the principles of harmonic reduction.
Understand and compose using secondary dominants and the two methods of modulation.
Utilize appropriate technology including but not limited to: CAI, Telephony, Notation software, Sequencing, Information Processing, Electronic Instruments. (NASM VII E) (6 of 7 Standards; TI:ME).
University Attendance Policy
- In registering for classes at the university, students accept responsibility for attending scheduled class meetings, completing assignments on time, and contributing to class discussion and exploration of ideas. Students will be excused for class absence for circumstances beyond the student’s control or if the student has been required to attend an activity sponsored by the university.
My Attendance Policy
-Students are allowed 5 unexcused absences without penalty. Subsequent unexcused absences will result in a penalty of 3 points deducted from the student’s final average. Students who have missed more than 3 weeks of class (nine absences) will receive a grade of FA. Communication is vital and is appreciated prior to your absence; if you have a problem attending class, please see me privately.Incomplete Work Policy
- Incomplete grades are assigned at the discretion of the instructor. You must follow Records Office policy for the removal of incomplete grades.Honor Code:

Course philosophy
In the first semester of the new year, I will grade much as Haydn did; you will correct your mistakes and resubmit compositions that do not work. Each submission should result in improvement, otherwise the credit earned for the assignment will remain at a lowered value.
