About

A native of Troy, Alabama, John Jinright graduated with honors from Birmingham-Southern College in 1984 with a music/business degree and spent the next 6 years working in the music industry.  Along the way, he was a buyer/inventory/salesperson for Nuncies Music of B’ham, started a music store (Bandstand, Inc), occasionally played vibes in a Dixieland band (Jack Marshall and the Alabama Dixiecats), and piano in a big band (Tony Marino and The Checkmates) plus filled in on percussion with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra.  He moved to Montgomery, Alabama when Bandstand Inc. closed and worked with Jim Darby developing new sales territory for Capitol Music (one of Music Inc. Magazine’s Top 50 U.S. Music Retailers).

Through his travels to and interactions with students and teachers in music education classrooms throughout central Alabama, he felt called to the teaching profession.   He left the music industry and began working on a master’s degree in music education at TROY.  He started teaching in 1992 at Troy and began working on his Ph.D. at the University of Alabama, but found Auburn University to be a better fit philosophically and geographically.

It took him ten years to finish his degree, partly because of his teaching overloads at TROY and his growing distaste for multiple regression techniques.  He was promoted to assistant professor of music when he earned his Ph.D. in 2003.  His insistance on the viability of a music business program at TROY since his hire date began the development of  the new general music/music industry track to satisfy requirements brought about by the “No Child Left Behind” Act.  He promptly began his Protools training leading to his Operator’s certification and subsequently earned a Digidesign educational partnership for Troy University.  He studied mixing with Charles Dye,  Ed Seay and Roger Nichols, three  grammy-winning engineers/producers and film/tv scoring with composer/sound designer Michael Wynne.

At Troy, he teaches music theory, applied oboe and bassoon, audio production, and serves as an accompanist.  He is a veteran accompanist of many musical theatre productions and served as musical director/accompanist of recent Troy University Theatre productions of Robber Bridegroom, Forever Plaid, and Nunsense. John is married to Penny and has two wonderful daughters;  Tessa and Jessica.  A Presbyterian convert to Anglicanism, he is presently on loan to St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church of Troy, where he serves as organist.
